Discovering Meaningful Activities

Photo%202%20web

Maile Richards-Au recently shared with care partner Donna Gamerot that she was feeling bored and was looking for some way to feel useful. Donna knew that Mrs. Richards-Au had a background of working in the hotel industry, so she brought her over to our laundry room. Mrs. Richards-Au was very pleased to be given the job of assisting the laundry staff with folding towels and aprons daily.

In the photo Mrs. Richards-Au and care partner Chiko Oshiro share stories and a laugh while working.

This story illustrates Eden Alternative Principle #4: An Elder-centered community creates opportunity to give as well as receive care. This is the antidote to helplessness.” and Principle #6: “Meaningless activity corrodes the human spirit. The opportunity to do things that we find meaningful is essential to human health.”
