Kokua for Kupuna Raises $100,000

2014%20kfk

On September 27th, hundreds of guests enjoyed an evening under the stars, and were treated to a stunning beachfront sunset and the musical talents of Kapena at our signature fundraiser, Kokua for Kupuna. Funds raised from this event benefit our long-term care residents who cannot afford the cost of 24/7 care and support provided by a nursing home.

Nearly 80% of our nursing home residents are covered by Medicaid, which means that they fall below poverty income levels. Unfortunately Medicaid does not cover the fully cover the cost of providing around the clock care. The funds raised from this event will help us to continue our 68 year legacy of caring for individuals in Maui’s community who cannot afford it.

We are proud to have honored VIP Foodservice, Island Grocery Depot (formerly known as Cash N’ Carry Warehouse) and the Roy H. and Lorraine M. Okumura Foundation for over 20 years of support and dedication. In addition to making instrumental gifts to several of our capital campaigns, VIP Foodservice has helped the organization by providing in-kind donations such as a refrigerated container when our refrigerator broke. Most recently, the Okumura Foundation donated $20,000, which has helped to provide over 1,000 meals daily to residents and clients.

We were fortunate to have guest speakers, Council Chair Gladys Baisa, a former client of Rehab by Hale Makua, and Adult Day Health client Olive Silva and her son Gilbert Silva share their experiences with our programs and services.

Thank you to our hard-working Board of Directors, Special Events Committee, volunteers, and talented emcees Teresa Lopes and Mitch Mitchell.

We are tremendously grateful to the over a hundred businesses that made donations to our silent auction or for our table decorations; and our generous and committed sponsors who made this year’s event possible:

  • Title Sponsor: Atlas Insurance Agency
  • Major Sponsor: Carlsmith Ball, LLP
  • Supporting Sponsors: Ace Holers Golf Club, ACM Consultants, American Savings Bank, First Hawaiian Bank, Gammie HomeCare, Genesis Rehab Services, Hawaii Gas, Kaiser Permanente, KPOA, Maui Soda & Ice Works / Roselani Tropics Ice Cream, MedAssets, Munekiyo & Hiraga, Ohana Health Plan, Sakamoto Properties, Servco Foundation, Towers Watson and United Healthcare Community Plan
