Personalizing Care Plans

Urusla Barona is a resident at Hale Makua Kahului. Activities Director Teresa Lopes talked with her recently to update her care plan to the new, more personal format and Ursula mentioned that she used to enjoy sewing. She had sewed blankets on her sewing machine, but now felt like she couldn't do it anymore. Teresa encouraged her to try again. Ursula and care partner Bety Idica used a sewing machine in the Aloha Café to make a pillow for Ursula’s bed. The pillow, patterned with hibiscus flowers, was so pretty that it was entered into the Maui County Fair craft exhibit.

This story illustrates Eden Alternative principle #6 “Meaningless activity corrodes the human spirit. The opportunity to do things that we find meaningful is essential to human health.”
