Residents Tour Ulapalakua Winery

Winery%20blog%20post

On July 23rd, Hale Makua Wailuku residents Alan Camara, Caroline Gurreia, and Donna Jaffe had the pleasure of visiting Ulapalakua Winery. Residents were treated to a wine tasting, browsed the gift shop, toured history museum, and enjoyed the spectacular upcountry views. In addition, Caroline had the double treat of also being able to celebrate her daughter Iris’ birthday with her at the Winery!

The idea of doing an outing was originally discussed in Resident Council as a goal for when Hale Makua Wailuku got its new holoholo van. Residents liked the idea of visiting Ulapalakua Winery. Individuals attending the outing were selected by those who expressed interest in seeing a winery and residents who had “alcohol orders” from their physician.

This illustrates Eden Alternative Principle 5: “An Elder-centered community imbues daily life with variety and spontaneity by creating an environment in which unexpected and unpredictable interactions and happenings can take place. This is the antidote to boredom.” and Principle 8: “An Elder-centered community honors its Elders by de-emphasizing top-down bureaucratic authority, seeking instead to place the maximum possible decision-making authority into the hands of elder or into the hands of those closest to them.”
