$150,000 Raised for Maui's Kupuna

Honorees%20web

Thank you to those who supported this year’s Kokua for Kupuna fundraiser, and helped make it another record-breaking year with over $150,000 raised help individuals who have no means to pay for our healthcare services. On September 10th, a crowd of 460 guests attended the sold out event, enjoyed a delicious luau dinner beachfront and under the stars at the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, and were treated to the Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning talents of the Makaha Sons.

The $10,000 matching challenge put forth by Bill Moore and the O.L Moore Foundation was exceeded, raising a total of over $22,000 to further our mission to improve the well-being of those in our care through compassionate, personalized health services in our homes and yours.

We were proud to have honored CEO Tony Krieg for his dedication and leadership of our organization over the past 35 years, the Wailuku Hongwanji Mission and the Maui United Young Buddhist Association for their instrumental roles in founding Hale Makua 70 years ago.

Highlighting the evening were guest speakers, Wayne Fujihara, Louise and Robert Lucas who shared their experiences with our services. Our nursing, rehab and home health services helped Wayne recover from illness so that he is now able to work again. Louise Lucas is a 106 year young Hale Makua resident whose grandson, Rob, moved her from New York to Maui thinking she was nearing her final days. Now four years later, we help care for Louise.

We are tremendously grateful to the businesses that made donations to our silent auction, and our sponsors:

A huge thank you to our talented emcees Teresa Lopes and Board Director Mitch Mitchell, and the amazing volunteers who helped with supporting our emcees, registering our guests, assisting in the silent auction, and spotting during the fund-a-need. This event would not have been possible without the help of volunteers: Jules Castillo, Carrera Catugal, Phyllis Colon, Cheryl Fernandez, Maile Ford, Donna Gomes, Jim Gruenes, Tammy Gruenes, Jodi Horton, Stephanie Jenison, Jordan Kahiamoe, Rosie Kahiamoe, Sydney Kahiamoe, Merri Ellen Lee, Fionna Marave, Tim McGee, Leo Morales, Josh Ponce, Tracy Poouahi, Gail Raikes, Kelly Rich, Teresa Rebolledo, Cindy Roman, Lauren Shearer, Ervin Story, Pamela Street, Karen Taeza, Fae Torres, and Hannah Werth.
