Honoring the Brave

Hale Makua residents have taken part in Maui County's annual Blossoms for the Brave event for the past four years. The event, sponsored by Kaunoa Senior Services, is held on the Friday before Memorial Day every year, and every year it brings excitement and fond memories for all of the residents and staff that have an opportunity to participate. Blossoms for the Brave brings community members from all over the island together to sew thousands of fresh flower lei to be laid on the graves of veterans at the annual Memorial Day ceremony held at Makawao Veterans Cemetery.

The flowers and ti leaf are donated from people all over the island. Our residents and staff, upon arriving to the front lawn of the County building, immediately began working to create beautiful, unique and fragrant lei to contribute to the nearly 3,000 that were made this year. Some residents participate in the event every year, while some are newcomers, desiring to get involved in the community, like Maria Pola, pictured above.

One of the things Maria misses most about her life before coming to Hale Makua is the, “opportunity to get out into the community and do something that makes a difference." Maria was among the residents at Blossoms for the Brave and expressed, “it was an exciting opportunity to give back, get out and see new and old faces, and get to know some of  the other residents from other neighborhoods at Hale Makua that I hadn’t met before."

As part of our Eden journey, we continuously look for ways that our residents and clients can find purposeful activities, opportunities to lend a helping hand, and activities that encourage our residents to create meaningful companionships with one another, while still maintaining their personal identity. Events like this are a great opportunity to accomplish all of those things and create lasting memories.
