Resident Gives Care by Volunteering

Img_3028%20web

For months resident Beverly Brown was asking for different ways she could help out and give back to Hale Makua. So, a time was scheduled for Beverly to go through volunteer orientation. From there she began spending a few hours a week volunteering for different neighborhoods and departments. Beverly distributes the weekly menus to residents for Nutrition Services (pictured above), cares for the Anela Room, helps Activities and Ilima with shredding files, and goes around to different residents and serenades them with her beautiful ukulele playing. Beverly is so happy that she has found an opportunity to give back to the place that she calls home, and we are so grateful for her!

This illustrates Eden Alternative Principle 4: An Elder-centered community creates opportunity to give as well as receive care. This is the antidote to helplessness.” and Principle 6: “Meaningless activity corrodes the human spirit. The opportunity to do things that we find meaningful is essential to human health.”
