Sewing for a Good Cause

Every year in preparation for our annual fundraiser, Kokua for Kupuna, Hale Makua residents assist with a variety of projects from table decorations to lei making and more. This year is no different. Along with staff, residents are busy making sure everything is ready for the sold out event on September 10th.

In celebration of our 70th anniversary, this year's theme for Kokua for Kupuna is Celebrating a 70 Year Heritage of Caring. The simplicity of life in the 1940s and our organizations humble beginnings are woven into many aspects of our event. One of these is using palaka fabric, which was popular in Hawaii in the 1940s.

Betty Idica, Kahului Activities Assistant, is leading a group of residents who have volunteered to help sew forty-six squares of the palaka fabric that will adorn tables. Olive Silva, seen above, is one of our talented resident sewers. Although Olive says she, "wasn't always big into sewing, I'm always willing to try new things and help out when I can." Olive has proven to be an immense help with sewing and she is also making yarn leis for the event.

We strive to have activities that bring residents, families, and staff together because we all benefit. This is one example of creating opportunities for our elders to give as well as receive care, one step to creating an Elder centered community.

Funds raised from Kokua for Kupuna will continue Hale Makua Health Services 70 year legacy of providing care and a home for Maui's kupuna and will give financial assistance to individuals who are unable to afford the cost of a nursing home.
