Fumanet Comes to Hale Makua

Recently an innovative Japanese exercise known to improve cognitive ability, attention, and concentration, and improve memory was brought to Maui. Dr. Kazutoshi Kitazawa traveled here from Japan to teach the art of Fumanet, as an exercise program for the elderly. Three of our Hale Makua care partners were able to partake in the class and become certified Fumanet instructors, Teresa Lopes, Jordan Kahiamoe, and Jodi Horton.

The exercise focuses on having its participant’s step, clap, and sing simultaneously in a rhythmic motion, encouraging carful thought as to not step on the net like grid placed in front of them on the ground.

The idea is to form a community with the participants so they feel comfortable and relaxed while doing the exercise. They meet for eight weeks at a time, one to two times per week. Teresa Lopes, Kahului Activities Director, said she could see a difference in the residents after the second class, noticing better concentration and movement, and seeing their confidence rise as they became more familiar with the steps.

We are grateful to see our residents learning something new, and increasing their ability to move and focus. At the end of the eight weeks, they will take in another small group of residents to teach.
